Volvo C70 transmissions are built for performance. Volvo builds some mighty fast and stylish cars nowadays. The C70 is a perfect example. A full sized luxury car built on a front wheel drive platform. Both the first and second generation C70 came equipped with a manual transmission and several automatic transmissions to choose from. Volvo automatic transmissions in the past were all supplied and made by the ZF company, now the transmissions are developed by Volvo with Aisin W of Japan. FYI: Geartronic is Volvo Cars’ name for its manual/automatic, hence manumatic transmission.
The C70 is front wheel drive car, believe it or not. Some of the finest luxury performance sedans are on front wheel and or all wheel drive chassis. What this means is both the transmission and engine are mounted under the hood, and each front wheel has a short axle running from the transmission to transmit the power.
Similar in design and function to the Porsche Tiptronic. It is available in 5 and 6 forward speed models, and is controlled by a micro computer and a complicated array of input sensors. The microcomputer receives precise signals, then processes them in real time and commands automatic shifts from the transmission to the next gear, especially nice if the driver is in manual mode and red lines the engine.
Manual shifting is operated with the shifter lever in the ‘manual’ mode. The gear stick can also be used in the same manner as any automatic transmission, where the transmission will shift by itself.
Generation one C70 models came with 3 transmission choices.
1. a 4 speed manual transmission
2. a 5 speed automatic overdrive transmission/transaxle
3. a 5 speed manual transmission.
The Generation 2 C70 Volvo used only two transmissions, dropping the 4 speed automatic, since 4 forward speeds are becoming outdated, for a 5 speed automatic override transmission, and updating the standard transmission to a 6 sped model.
The automatic transmissions used in the C70 are called the Geartronic manumatic units. Geartronic transmissions are manufactured by in Japan by Aisin AW. FYI: It’s important to note that manumatic-Geartronic transmissions use factory automatic transmission fluid. Hopefully you never have to add fluid or you have a leak.
