The Sienna Van is one of the most popular minivans [it has a lot of room inside to be termed a minivan] on the Market. Generation one Sienna Vans made from 1998 to 2003 have a 4 speed automatic overdrive transmissions or more accurately called a transaxle. All sienna vans are front wheel drive setups. To be more exact, it is called a transverse mounting system where the engine and transmissions are sideways [east to west] to the axis of the car.
The transmission used in Gen.1 Sienna vans is the A540E/A541E automatic transmission. This is a four speed automatic overdrive transmission with a lock up torque converter, which in effect gives you an extra highway gear. A transmission that is well documented to be reliable and trusty.
The Gen11 Sienna vans used a 5 speed automatic overdrive transaxle in the front wheel drive models called a U151E, and in the all wheel drive models used a unit called the U151F. Both units have 5 forward speed and a lock up torque converter. The gear shift was moved to the center seat console in Gen.11 models.
The Third Generation Sienna came out in 2011 and uses a six speed front wheel drive transmission. Essentially the same design as prior Sienna van transmissions with an extra highway gear for more fuel mileage. Sienna vans are not known for great fuel mileage.
