I was just reading a report about 120 owners of Toyota’s 2001-2003 RAV4 that have filed complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the numbers are sure to increase. Owners are upset and frustrated that Toyota is reluctant to acknowledge a defect with the electronically controlled transmissions.
The reports are saying that the transmission control unit (TCU) may fail and send mixed signals to the transmission. Once the owner notices the defect due to rough or missed shifts, the TCU needs to immediately be serviced to avoid major transmission damage. Owners were not notified even after Toyota has internally confirmed the issue (a TSB was issued to dealers in March of 2006).
The owners are all the more upset due to costly repair bills to replace transmissions when all the cars needed was a simple electronic module. A NHTSA spokesman said that it is watching the issue “very closely.” Meanwhile, Toyota is studying the issue to determine whether to extend its warranty on the parts in question.
The main reason I’m discussing this particular complaint issue is to demonstrate why you absolutely have no time to waste when you have the tiniest notion you have a transmission problem. The important part is that a relatively small or seeming innocuous problem can turn into a really expensive problem if you don’t take immediate action.
In fact, sales of the Rav4 transmissions from 2001 to the 2003 models has been somewhat above average, which is why I’m also writing this post. Te transmissions are well made and have potential for many good miles of use when taken care of properly. The big problem is that lots of folks deny their is a transmission problem or simply drive the car until it qiuts moving.
