Mazda Reveals New Transmission Technology

So far Mazda has taken a somewhat unconventional route to improving fuel efficiency of its vehicle fleet, focusing on lighter materials and new designs instead of rebuilding its powertrain lineup. It has done the company well, but to move to the next level of efficiency the automaker is also planning on upgrading its engines and transmissions lineup.

At last month’s 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda revealed its next-generation of powertrain technologies, which include two new engines and an advanced automatic transmission.

Grouped under the ‘SKY’ family of technologies, the lineup will include the new SKY-G direct injection gasoline engine, SKY-D clean diesel engine, and SKY Drive high-efficiency automatic transmission.

The engines and transmissions are due to be introduced from 2011 onward.

The engines use conventional technologies but by improving thermal efficiencies and reducing mechanical friction, Mazda engineers have managed to curb fuel consumption.

For the SKY-G direct injection gasoline engine, Mazda has managed to improve fuel economy over its current 2.0-liter gasoline engine by approximately 15%. The SKY-D clean diesel engine, meanwhile, improves the fuel economy over Mazda’s current 2.2-liter diesel by 20%.

Finally, there is the new SKY-Drive automatic transmission. It improves fuel economy by approximately 5%, due to a complete redesign that significantly reduces mechanical friction, a revised torque converter and clutch with minimized slip, and an optimized lock-up mechanism. A rapid clutch action was achieved by identifying the minimum amount of fluid necessary, making shifts feel almost like a dual clutch transmission.

One of my favorite methods of improving not only fuel mileage but making the car last longer is reducing weight. At a certain point manufacturing costs outweigh (no pun intended) the benefits of reduced weight. Mazda is not exactly a remote auto maker without technology, they chose to approach it from a different angle. • Monitoring of clutch load

The automated manual transmission control unit directly reads the signals from the following components:
• Transmission rpm sensor (L2)
• Transmission motor 1 (M17/3)
• Transmission motor 2 (M17/4)
• Clutch motor (M18)
• Electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5)
• Park pawl switch (S16/2)

Transmissions Articles: What is Regenerative Braking?

Regenerative braking is part of the complicated hybrid car transmission, engine and battery charging system which works together, in unison with every part of the drive-train.

Understanding how regenerative braking works may require a brief look at the system it replaces. Conventional braking systems use friction to counteract the forward momentum of a moving car. As the brake pads rub against the wheels (or a disc connected to the axle), excessive heat energy is also created. This heat energy dissipates into the air, wasting up to 30% of the car’s generated power. Over time, this cycle of friction and wasted heat energy reduces the car’s fuel efficiency. More energy from the engine is required to replace the energy lost by braking.

Hybrid gas/electric automobiles now use a completely different method of braking at slower speeds. While hybrid cars still use conventional brake pads at highway speeds, electric motors help the car brake during stop-and-go driving. As the driver applies the brakes through a conventional pedal, the electric motors reverse direction. The torque created by this reversal counteracts the forward momentum and eventually stops the car.

But regenerative braking does more than simply stop the car. Electric motors and electric generators (such as a car’s alternator) are essentially two sides of the same technology. Both use magnetic fields and coiled wires, but in different configurations. Regenerative braking systems take advantage of this duality. Whenever the electric motor of a hybrid car begins to reverse direction, it becomes an electric generator or dynamo. This generated electricity is fed into a chemical storage battery and used later to power the car at city speeds.

Regenerative braking takes energy normally wasted during braking and turns it into usable energy. It is not, however, a perpetual motion machine. Energy is still lost through friction with the road surface and other drains on the system. The energy collected during braking does not restore all the energy lost during driving. It does improve energy efficiency and assist the main alternator.
