As automatic transmissions become more reliable these days, it’s still easy to break and very expensive to fix part of the vehicle.

If heavily abused, the automatic transmission can be easily destroyed within just half an hour. Working within the dimensional limits of the rules, Jerry began by positioning the major components to eliminate misalignments found in nearly all previous designs. These small but crucial misalignments were responsible for binds, frictional losses and accelerated wear that reduced performance and initiated premature failures.
The mainshaft size was increased, virtually eliminating problematic flex. Top quality caged bearings were added throughout, including caged roller bearings on the thrust faces of all gears. Horsepower previously lost to inter-gear friction is now passed through to the rear wheels. A caged bearing was added at the rear of the input shaft to regain horsepower previously expended turning unused gears. Even the cluster gear rides effortlessly on two one-inch caged bearings.
The tailshaft is completely supported by a premium-caged bearing located in a CNC machined boss in the tailhousing. This additional feature prevents transmitting damaging movement and vibrations to the driveshaft and rear end.
The WC4-4 front bearing cover and throwout sleeve are CNC machined from billet steel for strength and accuracy. A large front bearing behind the cover helps withstand the rigors of racing and drivers launching the car from often uneven pits stalls.
All Jerico gears are machined from VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelt) steel, hot rolled specifically for Jerico. To absolutely ensure the finest quality steel, Jerico buys entire special runs directly from the mill. This represents a huge expense, but it is the only way to guarantee the finest quality material.
Each gear is extensively CNC machined to ultra-precise tolerances according to our straight cut design that has proven to be without peer in the market. When machining is completed, each gear is precisely heat treated, and then drawn back in our own ovens. Each batch of gears is subjected to multiple high-accuracy tests to assure proper hardness is attained.

Chrysler TF 604 Transmission Rebuild

The pictures above are of a disassembled TF 604 transmission out of the 2003 Chrysler Town and county van I am rebuilding the transmission on. These are called sub-assemblies. Sub-assemblies are small components in themselves inside the transmission working in harmony together.

Each sub-assembly will be disassembled in entirety and rebuilt. At the point each sub-assembly is disassembled and laid out I will take detailed pictures of each sub-assembly with an understandable explanation.

The clutch in a 300ZX is your standard everyday clutch, nothing special. All non-turbos and 84-86 turbos have 240mm Nissan clutches. The 87-89 Turbos have 250mm Nissan clutches. All are hydraulically operated in the normal fashion. If you are going to replace your clutch setup, buy a quality clutch kit (this means a new oem one). Replacing the manual transmissions gear lube is a good idea and convenient at this time.

Replacing the hydraulic actuation equipment should be part of the job. The hydraulic parts are subject to wear as well since they are hydraulic, a slave cylinder and master cylinder. The rubber components wear out too, so get off the jack and repair the whole system at the same time, it is really cheaper and definitely more efficient to take care of it now.

There are many aftermarket clutches for 300ZXs, some can get very expensive very fast. Racing clutches are highly recommended for modified turbos, for non turbo charged everyday cars buy a brand new OEM, original equipment clutch, which are available now from most automotive parts stores. The original equipment clutch manufacturers now offer the exact same clutches they sell to the factories, to the public via auto parts stores. Very affordable too.

You’ll need an alignment tool, a clutch kit of course that includes a throwout bearing. You would also be advised to have the flywheel surface machined at the machine shop, replace the rear main engine oil seal, and all of the clutch hydraulic components. The only non-common tool you’ll need is a pair of inside snap ring pliers for shift lever on non-turbo models.

Drain the transmission gear lube and refill it with the factory recommended synthetic gear lube. Synthetic is the keyword here. Make sure the transmission has no leaks, if it does have them fixed. Beats needing a replacement manual transmission.

I drove the Caravan, actually it is a Town and Country Van, to my buddy’s repair shop and borrowed his Snap On scanner. BTW: one of the vans is made by Dodge and the other one is a Chrysler, respectively, although mechanically they are identical. Anyway it has a 3.8L engine and the Chrysler TF 604 transmission.

It takes a few minutes to input the vehicle identification number into the scanner and get it setup for the exact model vehicle being tested. In this case I have to do a road test. The reason is that the scanner tool will literally pick more usable information about everything internal and all electrical functions during a short 5 minute road test.

For guys like me, this is a very cool and fun thing to do, what can be better than a scanner friendly car? And the Dodge and Chrysler transmissions are just that, the most scan tool friendly car in the world.

After my road test, I was able to examine the information the scanner collected. I want to make a point here, I do not monitor the scan tool while I drive. I go through the standard process necessary for the scan tool to gather the information. The scan tools I use gather info and save it while I drive.

The information showed no electrical issues to be concerned with, but it did show a very high CVI number for the 1-2 clutch pack. What is a CVI number, CVI is an acronym for clutch volume index. CVI is a measurement of how much transmission fluid enters a clutch pack to make it operate, if the number is to big or to small, or out of range (OR), it means the clutch pack is damaged.

A high or low CVI number on any clutch pack means that the transmission has an internal problem. My neighbor has approved a removal and dis-assembly, which is called an RDI. RDI is an acronym for remove, dismantle, inspect.

Once the transmission is removed, I will tear it down, clean it up like I was preparing for brain surgery and inspect the components for damage. I am going to document the whole process with pictures and present them to you as I go.

One of my old customers called me the other day and asked me if I wanted to check out his transmission in his 2003 Dodge Caravan. OK, no problem, but you gotta leave it with me so I can diagnose it. The thought of diagnosing and possibly repairing his transmission was very exciting to me. I have not really done any of this type of work since I sold my transmission shop of 26 years 4 years ago this month.

In reality, I am more in touch with what is going on in the technical side of the transmission world now, because I am not working and dealing with issues related to operating a shop. First off we talked about diagnosis and it’s importance. I told him that the TF604, which is the transmission in his vehicle was very scanner friendly and I can exact more information out of this transmission than practically any other transmission made.

The problem with his transmission is called a 1-2 shift slide /bump. A common problem with this transmission. Without going into the intimate, deep details of the process, we can figure out why the engine light is on and if it is the transmission. We can perform tests that would be the equivalent of a blood test, x-rays, MRI, cat scan on a human. The point is that when I’m done with the scanner part, I will have an intimate relationship with the transmission.

Because the van has about 85,000 miles on it, while the fluid is clean now, when it was changed last year, it was noted on the ticket that there was significant contamination in it. If this is so, there may be some internal issues to deal with. We will know if it is necessary to remove the transmission for repairs or rebuild, or whether we can install an update kit and solve this issue with the transmission in the van, at reasonable cost, soon.

Of course he is worried about the possibility of needing a rebuilt transmission. That is a reasonable concern that needs addressing. What I told him was we can’t make any decisions until my diagnosis is in. If the trans. needs to be removed to be repaired and it ends up that a replacement transmission is needed, I flat out told him that GotTransmissions.com was the place to buy it.
