The Hyundai Azera was introduced globally in 1986 as a full sized car. When it was re-introduced for the 4th generation it was brought out as a midsize mid-range luxury car it had a facelift and only one transmission available.
When the 4th generation was brought out in 2005, it was completely redesigned, both the chassis and body sheet metal were entirely new. Thus it became a midsized car. To make the cake even sweeter, more creature comforts and updated equipment were added. So it was appropriate to add a new and modern transmission at the time.
I think Hyundai was smart to only offer an automatic transmission. I will never understand why some manufacturers offer a manual shift transmission for a non high performance luxury car, who wants to shift gears anyway?
Hyundai Azera Transmissions for sale that are remanufactured according to factory specs. and abiding by strict manufacturing guidelines always outperform and outlast cheaper versions.
Another thing worth mentioning is that this is a front engine, front wheel drive car. We call it a transverse mounting system in the industry. To make it simpler, the engine and transmission are bolted together and mounted sideways under the hood, you may have noticed.
In reality, the technical name for a front wheel drive transmission is a transaxle. A transaxle combines all of the transmission portion, and differential portion in one lightweight aluminum casing. It saves a bunch of space and weight. 98% of the front wheel drive cars use a variation of this setup.
The transmission is called the ”Shifttronic” which is Hyundai’s version of a manumatic transmission. A manumatic transmission operates both as a conventional automatic transmission and manual transmission by allowing the driver to override the automatic mode by moving the shift lever into a second shift gate equipped with two positions, allowing for manual shifting or automatic shifting.
The transmission itself is of 5 or 6 forward gears plus another fuel saving feature that many people never realize it has because it is almost unnoticeable, it is called lockup torque converter. It has an electronically activated clutch inside the torque converter which acts as another forward gear thus saving more fuel on the highway and increasing engine life.
The fact is that this transmission is a fully computerized unit. It receives signals from various sensors mounted on the chassis and engine after they are processed by an on-board computer in real time.
