The BMW Series 3 is an icon of sorts. It’s been in production since 1975. Considering what it started out as and what it is today, continuing changes were always in the works as it continued to be popular and marketable through five generations. The fifth generation was when BMW decided the transmissions needed to be equal to or better than the competitions.
BMW Series 3 Transmissions for Sale, E90 must be prepared with more detail to work quality, testing all sub components, and more training and experience than simpler and easier to prepare transmissions. If you need one call us right now, 866-320-1182. GotTransmissions.com
Since I am transmission rebuilder and shop owner of 30 plus years, I get really excited learning about new automatic transmission designs and technology breakthroughs. The fifth gen. Series 3 was made from 2005 until 2011. It only has two transmissions offered, a 6 speed manual transmission, and a 6 speed automatic overdrive transmission.
Another point of interest to some folks may be that this car is built on a front engine, rear wheel drive chassis, with all wheel drive. This arrangement is my favorite, it is stronger and more durable than the FWD setups, which is appropriate for a luxury performance car. Some of my feelings for this design regards the all wheel drive too. This is a better setup than all others.
All wheel drive is is an outstanding feature which allows for better rain traction and handling, plus if you live in hilly or snowy country, all wheel drive is safer and is less likely to leave you stranded in a slippery situation.
The automatic transmissions are conventional in design. Though there is nothing conventional about BMW engineering. Although the transmissions are made by German Transmission giant ZF Manufacturing Company, ZF is well known for outstanding transmissions used in several other highly thought of German cars as well.
A feature not well known about is called lock up, which is like an extra forward gear, it is built right into the torque converter, thus allowing more fuel savings and longer engine life.
My best technical advise for allowing this transmission to live out it’s full natural lifespan is to have it maintained every 30 to 40,000 miles. Especially if you live in LA or another city where lots of idling time is racked up sitting in traffic.
Remember this, only use factory purchased transmission fluid. There is no substitute or additive to make other fluids meet the factory specs. So don’t allow some ‘non expert’ to tell you “this stuff is just as good”. It is not. Factory fluids are actually cheap when you consider the alternative, a premature transmission failure.
