On-demand all-wheel drive was offered with an automatic transmission only. All of the CTS transmissions are made for rear wheel drive cars only.
The first generation of CTS was made from 2003 to 2007. If you want to identify your transmission, here is a list of said transmissions. The Tremec T-56 is a common manual transmission. The AY-6 is a 6-speed manual transmission manufactured by Aisin. It is designed for longitudinal engine applications. Longitudinal meaning front engine/rear wheel drive, with a drive-shaft connecting the transmission to the rear differential.

The second generation was introduced in 2008 and is still being made. Using a similar array of transmissions, they included more forward gears in most cases. The Tremec came with 6 forward speeds as opposed to 5. Except for the Aisin AY-6, the other units now have 6 forward speeds, with a lock up torque converter.
A lock up torque converter is like an extra forward gear, so you end up with even more fuel savings, and a longer engine life. Here is a list for your convenience, even if you don’t know it.
