“Where Our Customers Send Their Friends”
Digging into the finer details of transmissions, it is obvious that there are a lot of choices out there. As far as I’m concerned there is only one way to remanufacture a transmission. We all about educating our consumers about how to choose and buy the most reliable transmissions.
Don’t shop by price only. For over 25 years I spent owning and operating a transmission shop that rebuilt and repaired automatic and standard transmissions. Not every shop rebuilds transmissions the same way. Quality conscious shops are interested in selling you a replacement transmission that is your best interests, with a great warranty. The other end of the deal are poorly transmissions, fixing what is wrong only, or reuse old parts, they call it a rebuild and pray it makes it out of warranty.
I don’t think many shops are intentionally dishonest, most transmission shops try to be on the level. Unfortunately this is an unregulated business, so you get a product that is prepared the way the rebuilder was taught how to in the beginning. Because the transmission business is unregulated in terms of what the exact definition of a rebuild job is, it may differ greatly from shop to shop.
The issue here is that you want to only do this one time. Buy a quality tranny with a good long term warranty and learn to take care of your rebuilt transmission so it will last for a lot longer than the warranty.
One of my strategies was to educate our customers by listening to their concerns and needs and every detail they needed to make an informed decision. For instance, a young single mother needs reliability and the confidence, and peace of mind. A work truck needs reliability for obvious reasons too. We ask lots of questions and our customers liked it, people like to talk about themselves.
After receiving permission in writing on the invoice to remove the transmission we went to work. After removal, cleaning and inspecting all parts, we made a checklist of what is necessary to rebuild the transmission better than it was before.
Cleaning the transmission thoroughly is the most important part of the process. You may be the best rebuilder in the world, if the parts and area you work in are dirty, you will have problems.
Anything less than factory stock parts is unacceptable. Factories use the best brands parts available for your make of transmission. Some shops reuse the bushings and bearings, reusing good looking old parts. I have seen worn out parts ‘doctored up’ and reused.
You can’t see any of these parts from the outside, so choosing a competent supplier with a good reputation is important. A properly rebuilt transmission may cost a few bucks more, but it pays for itself in the long run by lasting well beyond your expectations. It may save time as well, since hopefully you are not back at the shop every week with another problem.
Very often I would invite my customers into the shop to see their worn out transmission and speak with my mechanic. Then we showed them new replacement parts and explained why they needed replacement, usually one look makes it obvious.
